‘Medicaid’ doesn’t have to be a bad word!

According to senior living advisors, the holidays are a time of year when adult children visit their aging parents and loved ones and often discover that there has been a significant decline in their loved one’s ability to live independently.

While there are various elder care options available, there is one particular option I’d like to tell you about that is not well known but is slowly gaining in popularity in communities all across the country. They are called Private Adult Care Homes, which are owned by individuals who may or may not have formal medical training, but provide custodial care in a “home like” setting.

As senior living advisors, we often have clients that question whether they should apply for Medicaid or perhaps seek a Veterans pension for themselves or a loved one. The correct answer is “that depends”.

It depends on the individual’s situation…meaning:

  • What are the elder care goals for the loved one?
  • What are the assets that are remaining on hand?
  • What is the monthly income?
  • What will the approximate monthly costs of care be?

While there are certainly a lot of variables to consider, one thing that I have learned over the years as a senior care consultant is that we can have really great outcomes for clients who have planned appropriately prior to transitioning there loved one to Medicaid.

With appropriate planning, typically a client can conserve assets and also transition into a high quality Medicaid community. Contrary to common belief, when a loved one is in receipt of Medicaid they are not subject to receiving sub-par care. This doesn’t mean that there is any guarantee that there won’t be concerns or issues with care — that can happen in any elder care facility. But Medicaid does not necessarily equate to poor care.

Advising our clients on every feasible option is what our senior care consultants have successfully done every day since 2006. Caregivers are very overwhelmed, we understand that. We do the best we can to alleviate that stress and create a plan of care that will accomplish the best possible outcome.

About our senior living advisors

Care Connect Direct is based in Virginia Beach, VA. Their virtual consulting services grew out of the fact that six out of 10 son or daughter caregivers live more than an hour away from Mom or Dad. Virtual consultations reduce the burden of that distance and help adult children navigate the complexities of caring for a loved one as they age.
