NOTICE To All Veterans and Surviving Spouses of Veterans

Are you considering home health care, assisted living or nursing home care in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Williamsburg, Hampton Roads, North Carolina, Currituck, the Outer Banks or ANYWHERE in the U.S.?

If so, may be eligible for up to $2,795 (2025 rates/married Veteran) per month in additional income to help pay home health care, assisted living and nursing home care, even if you did not retire from the military?

Millions of veterans and their families are eligible for Veterans Benefits but do not take advantage of them. Why? Many reasons, including confusion over the benefits that are available, eligibility requirements, lack of promotion and communication from the Veteran’s administration and the complexity of the application process itself.

For Serving During A Time Of War

The Aid and Attendance Program

The VA Aid and Attendance pension program is available to Veterans, or their widowed spouses, where the veteran served 90 days or more of active duty, with one day during a period of wartime. For an eligible veteran who is married the Aid and Attendance Veterans pension benefit pays up to $2,795* per month, for a single Veteran without dependents, the monthly benefit is $2357* and for a widowed spouse the benefit is $1478*. The pension is TAX FREE and paid directly to the Veteran or widowed spouse, NOT the care provider and can substantially supplement the costs of long term care.  (*2025 rates)

This benefit can help a veteran or widowed spouse pay anyone, including their child, for home care. It can also be used to help pay for professional care in the home, assisted living , nursing care, prescription drugs, copays and much more.

The Aid and Attendance Program can often help a veteran or widowed spouse to avoid the need to apply for Medicaid or transition into a nursing home prematurely. The benefit can also help to preserve assets and ensure you have the funds to pay for your care until the end of life.

This is an excellent NBC News story on how this program helps with Assisted Living or Nursing Costs.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The veteran must have served 90 days or more of active duty, with one day during a period of wartime
  • The veteran must have received a discharge other than dishonorable
  • The veteran or spouse must have monthly medical expenses or care needs
  • Applicants must pass an income and asset test before obtaining Aid and Attendance

Net worth and income are both factors, and there are specific income and asset limits set by the VA. It is important to work with a VA accredited agent in filing for this benefit to ensure that you receive the maximum that you may be entitled to and to help your claim get processed as quickly as possible. Eligibility rules are complex however never assume you or your loved one is not eligible!
