Frequently Asked Question
Q. Medicaid patients receive worse care than those residents who have the ability to private-pay.
A. This question is asked regularly during consultations with our clients. Many people have the misunderstanding that when someone is of Medicaid services and supports that they will receive poor quality of care in contrast to a resident who is privately paying.
The TRUTH is that when a resident is admitted to a SKILLED NURSING community, the only personnel that will know that the resident is receiving Medicaid is the business office and the social worker.
The Medicaid recipient is NOT housed in a different part of the community and in fact could be the roommate of another resident who may be paying $10,000-$15,000 per month (average private pay cost in Virginia 2024).
Unfortunately, if the nursing home provides poor care they will be providing poor care to all of the residents, not just those who are receiving Medicaid long-term care services and supports.

HOWEVER, keep in mind that it is NOT the number of deficiencies that you should be concerned with, IT IS THE NATURE of the deficiencies that is most important!
Keep in mind that it is against the law for nursing homes to discriminate against residents based on method of payment!
